I’m not a fan of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” phenomenon, and I was pretty sure the religious community was behind me at least on the least problematic issue of premarital sex. But today I found an article from a pastor that agreed with my objections to the book. He found the main issue with the book to also be that the main character, whatever her name is, is okay with being abused by the rich guy, whatever his name is. Why is she okay with this abuse? Because women aren’t taught to value themselves in this society, and that is exactly what this pastor says. Women can only get attention when that attention involves abuse, whether the abuse is ‘consensual’ or not.
I recommend those fans and those who don’t fancy the book to read the full article, and even if you don’t agree, understand where this pastor and many other women are coming from when they object to this book. It’s not that they aren’t willing to live a bit or have fun or be adventurous or are feminazis, it’s about learning to respect yourself as a woman. Women wouldn’t be okay with this type of treatment, if it wasn’t for the patriarchal culture we live in that makes women playthings and not human beings.
